During times of economic uncertainty productivity becomes a real focus for organisations, working their assets harder! This I have seen in recent times. Employers expect a lot from individuals, that they be multi skilled and flexible. Welcome back the need for generalists, not specialists. We have seen in the market when new roles are generated due to change or restructure a need for candidates to be able to wear a number of hats – operations, hr and payroll/digital media, business development and account management – a whole raft of combinations. I encourage candidates to tell me at interview their whole story, going back to their first jobs after uni – you will be amazed how those experiences back then can put you in a great position now to secure work. Don’t discount any work you have done and skills you may have picked up along the way – they will come in handy and make you a valuable employee who can contribute and keep businesses going. Contracting work is still very active, generalist roles across sales and marketing and HR at the mid level are still the most prevalent.

Maintaining a certain level of income to meet current financial commitments is becoming increasingly difficult for candidates as they end their contracts, or are facing restructure and reenter the job market. We hope that at Profiler Recruitment that we listen and guide our candidates through this uncertainty…My advice is if you have a permanent job enjoy what it has to offer and use this time to deepen and accelerate your skills. Maybe consider doing further study if you can afford it (time and money). Permanent opportunities dropped off this week with a smattering of work in Communication and HR administration roles. Contracting continues to provide options for candidates with roles across health and transport sectors.

From Marketing (end to end), to purchasing/product management to HR generalist roles there is work available - however many were required in remote areas. That is just what we saw this week and in business and recruitment it changes every day. Contracting continues to grow, so if you are looking for work have you considered a contract in a regional/remote area?

There hasn’t been a flurry of high end senior positions in January this year compared to the activity in December. What we are seeing at Profiler Recruitment this week is a sharp increase in mid level roles – however on a part time or contract basis. Extra arms and legs are needed for a variety of business needs – to implement new performance management systems, to support employee relations initiatives from the HR perspective and from the Marketing Communications perspective contract opportunities in the communications space for short term projects have come through. My advice to candidates looking for a change keep focused, working on developing your skills - there are many changes pending across major organisations which I believe will continue to drive work and income at the mid level, the big jobs wont be there for a while as businesses are planning their direction against the economy. Part time and contract work is continuing to be popular for employers to get the job done.

I didn’t like what the media, ABS and government has said about 2011 being a year of zero growth for jobs. Global instability has slowed decisions in hiring the Australian government says but I would suggest what it is showing is a shift in our attitude to the type of work we do and how we apply ourselves. Our contractor numbers at Profiler Recruitment increased during 2011 as opposed to permanent placements – a sign of the times. Clients were choosing to place a contractor in the role. I do sound like a broken record to many candidates I speak to who say they just want a permanent job – the reality is there arent many of them at the moment – however there are great opportunities to help companies flourish as a contractor, and who knows when the global market improves (which fingers and toes crossed it will) then everyone who has proven their commitment and skills in a contract capacity will well be rewarded with a permanent status. The key to survival in the job market I tell my team, candidates and clients are – be flexible, work hard and seize the opportunity. Might sound a little old fashioned. Hot spots this week for contract and permanent work at Profiler Recruitment are utilities, local government, health and community services.

Well the year has started off quite busy at Profiler Recruitment, thank goodness the team has been returning since Jan 1 looking refreshed and happy to help our wonderful clients and candidates. There has been a flurry of interviews of candidates for a range of exciting roles – mostly contract (paternal leave reasons is a current trend for creating contract opportunities) and across event coordination/IR specialists/senior HR generalists just this week .We are waiting for other clients to return from their break to discuss the great talent we have uncovered for their business needs and great projects planned for 2012.

I am excited that I have been invited to present to one of our clients next week on Recruitment Advertising – I do have a passion for it and will be happy to share some of the tips in my regular blog once I finish writing it!

I have been reading a lot of 2012 predictions and horoscopes to help guide my new year resolutions and didn’t find anything I liked that related to myself or my family and friends. I have also been voraciously reading the Steve Jobs authorised biography over the summer break and have decided make my 2012 new years resolution to follow the Apple advertising camapign from the 1980′s “Think Different.”. I think its fine to reinvent something that works – even if I didn’t think of it myself. That is what Steve did! Profiler looks forward to working together with you in 2012.

I am looking forward to 2012. It has been an uncertain yet busy year for our clients and candidates. Many people are questioning what they will be doing in 2012. Many senior executives have opted to review what other opportunities are out there as companies announce mergers and acquisition activity. This will create opportunities at different levels across organisations for everyone. Change is definitely on the agenda for clients in the new year. There is also exciting news as many people plan they are going on parental leave creating contract opportunities around the 12 month mark. The sectors we predict for 2012 as bringing the most work to professionals in the HR and Sales and Marketing space include Government, Utilities, Education, Health and Communications.

Twas the night before Christmas…..and there is movement afoot. At Profiler Recruitment we have been surprised at the number of enquiries and expressions of interest from professionals to explore new opportunities in the job market in December. We normally have this level of enquiry in January after the Christmas break however I think I can attribute this early activity to three reasons 1) people have been waiting to see what is happening with the economy and have been reluctant to move earlier 2) because they have been waiting they have not been 100% happy in their current role and really cant wait any longer and are busting for a change 3) people are getting far more organised these days and in control of planning their futures.

Expect a ripple effect in the new year of opportunities if you are looking for a change.
