What is going on? It must be gearing up for the end of financial year. IT and Telco companies are dividing, merging, acquiring and even growing. Still not too much from Financial Services as they plan for their next structural change. Service organisations providing consulting expertise we have seen a real kick start. Companies are no doubt looking at their numbers so they look good by June 30 2013. As a result we have seen a shake down of senior roles and senior contracts winding up. This will only create new opportunities from July 1 as budgets and plans are approved.

There has been a lot of work at Profiler Recruitment in the HR space at the $100k – $140k range over the last month – and these have mostly been permanent roles, Marketing roles in the Fundraising and Digital Media space continue to be in demand and in IT cloud computing and web development skills are currently in demand. Digital media, and the social platforms associated with this ever evolving technology is seeing our clients look for a unique blend of content and communication skills coupled with IT development skills.

Specialist skills are needed to get the job done at the moment Remuneration, OH&S, WorkCover as an example in the HR space – not the really glamorous parts some would say who are not into it but critical to the functioning and bottom line of an organisation.

Just to let you know that Profiler Recruitment will be at the Melbourne AHRI Practices day Tuesday 30 April. If you are there please stop by and say hi we will love to catch up.

Been a busy week, lots of work regionally – Gippsland, Shepparton way in Victoria across IT and HR (Remuneration/OD/L&D/ER and IR) and top end of Collins Street. Marketing opportunities have slowed just at the moment. There has been a demand for the first time for many years for Remuneration skills from benchmarking exercises to salary reviews. This has been as a result of the economic times, salaries were pitched against company performance when times were good and sales targets were highs. Things have changed, sales can be difficult to attain in certain markets (causing some discontent as bonuses cannot be granted) and organisations cant afford to continue to bring in new staff at current salary levels for the role. So HR people with rem skills are very handy.

Hope the Easter Bunny comes your way. Enjoy the Easter break.

While casually leafing through the pages of the Sunday Age enjoying a break down at the beach at the beginning of the year I was horrified to stumble across an article “Lost in the crowd – the older women get, the less attention they receive”. The article discussed a new social phenomenon “invisible woman syndrome”. I was in shock to read on and found myself in that age bracket. I couldn’t believe it was true about myself, my friends and colleagues. How awful to feel invisible.

Working in recruitment we talk with people across all ages, genders and backgrounds and place them in great roles - noone is invisible and everyone has something to offer. My clients love expereince and maturity, they also love energy and passion. It is all how you profile yourself amongst your peers, work colleagues and community – it is up to you. I think the author of The Age article was feeling rather tired at being ignored and was giving up. And you cant blame gender. So maybe do something about it. There is a quote I often reiterate from PT Barnum around the office “Without promotion something terrible happens. Nothing!”.

Sheryl Sandberg is not backing down. The Facebook chief operating officer’s book “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” has just been released. This book was borne out of her frustration for women not being in positions of power and she talks about some real life strategies to get ahead for men and women. Her speeches in the past have encouraged them to ask for a raise or ask for career promotions.

Just a few really simple tips from my own experience and those around me on how not to be invisible in the workplace and while you buy your sandwich at lunch so you get served:

Stand, straight and tall – be proud of who you are and what you have achieved.

Keep your image up to date – get that haircut, change your glasses, wear clothes that make you look smart and feel happy

Ask to be involved in different projects at work and in the community

Get your online and social media skills up to date

Network (and not just online) to build your confidence and future job prospects

Smile

I believe it is a state of mind being invisible. If you just smile and make eye contact with others you are a long way ahead of anyone and you will get noticed.

It is already February, and Profiler Recruitment has been frantic as clients are back on deck after a great summer break (many took advantage of the slower times of 2012 and used their leave to come back to work super refreshed!) and talking to us about their plans for 2013.

I had spent January reflecting and researching what the current economy meant for the job market today and into the future. Research from IBIS indicates that recruitment will grow again because of the shedding of staff, however 2013-2014 will be a time of “consolidation” for organisations. Improvement won’t be seen till 2017 – 2018,so what does this mean and what have we been seeing at Profiler Recruitment already at the start of this year?

Clients are still planning to reduce workforces in some areas, manage performance and restructure businesses – this creates work in the HR generalist and Change space for HR professionals. This week we are working on a number of contract and permanent HR generalist roles to cover this need. We have seen an increase in the need for operational excellence across all the skill sets we recruit for. Expensive IT projects that haven’t delivered are under scrutiny as to which way to go – this has led to some uncertainty for these professionals as they look for decisive leadership.

With the maturing of knowledge across social and digital media clients this week have been talking about their needs to invest in online marketing.

Stay tuned if you are a digital, ecommerce and social media strategy, with a background in instructional design and elearning you will be in big demand as companies are embracing and combining all these skills to communicate with their clients internally and externally. If you have experience in high volume and graduate recruitment and are available now to work on a program watch out -good news from many organisations is that they are revamping and reintroducing graduate programs – numbers of graduates required is increasing – great news for 2012 graduates and business.

As clients return gradually from wintry Europe or the sandy beaches of Apollo Bay we have a had a busy start to 2013. We have seen a marked increase in on site recruitment roles which is a great sign that there are opportunities for potential employees both internally and externally. These new positions with organisations seem to come from the winning of new contracts, mergers and acquisitions or positive restructures and organisations are gearing up to resource for success.

The sector that seems to never stop at this time is not for profit with needs across marketing comms, fundraising and recruitment to start the year.

There must be plans to reshape and implement IT strategies in 2013 as HRIS and IT shared services positions are on the boil for a number of our clients.

The majority of roles this week come from the utilities, health and fmcg sectors.

Just a reminder to check your online profile just in case some photos from New Years have been tagged with you as the star. without you knowing, except your prospective new employer!

Candidates often ask “Surely it is quiet over the Christmas break – there cant be any new opportunities over the Christmas season – everyone is in holiday mode?”. It can be hit or miss but be prepared. If you are available now and looking for work be on your best behaviour during the Christmas holidays as you may just get a call. Clients actually spend time thinking and planning what they want to do in the new year and make contact wanting to know who is out there who could just step in and solve their problems at work in the new year.

At Christmas time weird things happen – not just personally but professionally too and with this comes opportunities. People decide with the new year they want a new job or just don’t want to go back to work and pack up and go overseas!

Over the years I have been able to meet the urgent requirements of clients by tapping into a great network of candidates ready to step in to a contract role. While they get their head around if they need a permanent person, clients tend to use this time over the Christmas/New Year as an opportunity to try out the new person and clients are grateful they can step in at short notice! If you are around and not swanning around on holidays you get first mover advantage!

Why candidates have been succesful in securing work at this time of year is because:

Their phone isnt turned off, or is in range, and they are accessible to speak to discuss opportunities

They can be interviewed face to face at short notice – they can drive back within a few hours from Lakes Entrance to the Melbourne CBD, no planes involved

CV’s are up to date with all work completed for the year – the complete picture is there.

Referees can also be accessed……

You are flexible to start straight away – and go in wide eyed regarding the salary and role expectations (no problem!)

And your suit is clean and pressed (hide your thongs!)

Chat in the New Year,,,,,,enjoy this time with family and friends. Season’s Greetings from myself and the great team at Profiler Recruitment and Profiler Careers.

Every December I reflect on the current job market for my candidates and the candidate market for my clients. Everyone always asks me what has it been like for Profiler Recruitment for the year - have you been busy? I think everyone is hoping that the recruitment industry is jumping as that reflects that the economy is going OK.

Every year it is different – except for one thing that is a constant, there is always work to be done and people required to do it. What I have noticed this December 2012 is that there is not the same volume of contract work as previous years, there is actually a greater swing towards permanent opportunities. This could well be a reflection that new work is not starting which is a sign that organisations are not eager at the moment to start new projects and are waiting. So the need for extra hands on deck (the contract market) is not currently required at the same level as previous years. There will be a shift at the senior end of the market as offers have been made and accepted before Christmas which will hopefully trickle down and provide opportunities for promotion and new roles across industries.

Next week I will give some tips on how to stay active and current during the silly season if you are in the job market.

There seems to be a lot more activity in the job space one month out from Christmas. Opportunities for candidates looking for work seem to be coming out of the woodwork after a rather quiet couple of months. Roles around this week at Profiler Recruitment have been around OD, Recruitment (that is a good sign) and HR Generalists in the Marketing space it has been around Marketing Communications and Product Buying. Sectors happening right now health, utilities and education. There are signs of regrouping across financial services which is a good sign.

Clients are going through the exciting (and unknown future) time of mergers and acqusition in their organisations. For HR practitioners this is generating work putting all their generalist skills to work. There is a slow but steady increase in the number of HR Director positions which indicates signs of movement and opportunity at the top end.

There will be some exciting news about Profiler Recruitment – early next week all will be revealed. No, not a merger or acquisition, but stay close.

If you are available now and happy to contract indefinitely, your flexibility will pay off and you will secure work soon.
